Abstract
New multibeam mapping of the Ikka fjord, SW Greenland, shows 938 individual ikaite columns. In the up to 29 m deep fjord, columns 0.5 - 20 m in height above the seafloor grow up to the halocline 2-4 m from the water surface. The columns grow from carbonate saturated high-pH ground water seepages through faults in the cabonatite-syenite bedrock, where ikaite precipitates as the ground water mixes with Mg-rich sea water in temperatures <7° C.
